Responding In A Time Of Crisis

Afghanistan & Haiti
The heartbreaking news of the fall of Afghanistan with the mass exodus of refugees and the devastating earthquake in SW Haiti is overwhelming and both situations require an enormous response from the world in prayer and financial and personal resources. FPC has been in a relationship with ministries responding to both situations if you would like to respond by engaging and supporting their efforts.

Serving Our Neighbors

Houston Welcomes Refugees - Responding to the Crisis in Afghanistan
Houston Welcomes Refugees/HWR, an FPC priority mission partner, is mobilizing our city to welcome refugees with compassion, hope, and honor as they resettle and start a new life in Houston. HWR is seeking volunteers to come alongside refugees from Afghanistan as friends to help them settle into life here. RSVP now for an upcoming orientation in order to begin serving on a Move-In Team or Welcome Team. An easy way to jump in and help (orientation not required) is to donate completed Welcome Kits! See the link for information on how to fill one. Completed Kits can be donated to FPC. Please stop by the table in Palm Court this coming Sunday to learn more! Gifts can be made directly to Houston Welcomes Refugees HERE.

Houston Responds Disaster Response
Our hearts go out to our neighbors in Louisiana after experiencing the horrific impact of Cat 4 Hurricane Ida. The storm has left great destruction,  flooding, and heartache for so many in southern Louisiana. We were in communication with friends in the area including FPC Baton Rouge before the storm, and wait to hear from them on their status and needs.  For Disaster Response Updates & Ways to Help, click HERE.

Support Feeding Houston's Heroes
As the COVID-19 Pandemic continues to impact lives here in our city, Feeding Houston's Heroes is needed more than ever. FHH delivers food to a variety of first responders and frontline workers like Houston Fire Department Stations, Houston Police Department and Houston Fire Departments quarantined officers, front line workers, etc. each week. If you'd like to support their efforts, gifts may be made to FPC for FHH. Click HERE to give to Feeding Houston's Heroes.

Main Street Ministries
Main Street Ministries' Operation ID program needs Data Intake Volunteers | M-Th | 9-11am

Want to support the mission of Main Street Ministries but not interested in direct client interaction? Then this is the role for you. A Data Intake Volunteer will receive referrals from the OPID manager and input them into the database. This begins the process for a client to have the barrier of an ID removed as they make steps towards stability. If you are interested or want to know more, contact Carrie Sadler, Volunteer Coordinator at csadler@msmhouston.org.

Restoring Justice
Restoring Justice is dedicated to loving and fighting for the people the system has forgotten. Established on faith-based principles, Restoring Justice provides excellent legal, social, and counseling services to people accused of crimes who cannot afford to hire attorneys themselves. Their mission is to pursue Christ's justice. Their vision is that the criminal justice system acknowledges, respects, and upholds Constitutional rights and dignity for every human. For opportunities to support and serve with Restoring Justice, click HERE.

Reaching The Nations

Haitians have suffered so greatly over the years, and recently with Covid, the assassination of their president, and now the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the southwestern part of the country. FPC was actively engaged in Haiti for many years with Haitian Christian Outreach (HCO).  Having worked with them after the 2010 earthquake, FPC again is coming alongside HCO as they are currently responding to the great need of their neighbors to the west in Les Caves, Jeremie, and other communities following the earthquake.  Food, water, shelter/tents, and medical care are needs that they are working to provide.  Their Community Hospital in Peredo (which FPC helped fund and where several FPC medical teams have served) is equipped and being prepared with medications and supplies to treat patients from the devastated areas.  HCO's local pastors and medical professionals have packaged and distributed meals and are prepared to feed those coming to the hospital. HCO is organizing a team of medical professionals to enter the country in the next few weeks in order to relieve the first responders and provide orthopedic care at the hospital.

See more information about Haitian Christian Outreach’s earthquake response on the Haitian Christian Outreach Facebook page
and on their blog which is linked on the Haitian Christian Outreach website. To donate a gift directly to Haitian Christian Outreach, click on the link below.

Africa Renewal Ministries
Please continue to pray for healing and relief in Uganda during the COVID crisis. Here are a few ways you can pray:
-Pray for the Lord’s protection over our staff as they care for the sponsored children and people in their communities
-Pray for the local church to have wisdom and discernment for how to best love and serve their communities even though church doors are closed--this is an unprecedented time for the church to point people to Jesus!
-Pray for the medical teams and hospitals that are working around the clock to care for the sick
-Pray for the families who have lost loved ones
-Pray for food and provision for each household

Friends, one of our dear ministry partners, Sunbula, is feeling the impacts of COVID-19 on their ministry. Sunbula is a small nonprofit that runs the only Palestinian fair trade shop in Jerusalem. Hundreds of artisans from across Israel/Palestine rely on Sunbula to sell their products. Every year we support them in our annual Advent Missions Market, so you may recognize the name and their beautifully crafted products. Help us protect their income source and provide for the families of the artisans as they strive to continue their heritage work and remain resilient.

Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust
One of our longstanding and beloved global ministry partners, Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust and their economic empowerment project, Woza Moya, need our support. The Woza Moya shop is open and the artisans are back at work creating amazing products, despite a drop in orders due to the lack of visitors due to the pandemic. The beaded animals and crafts from Woza Moya are always an Advent Market favorite. We encourage you to help and support our brothers and sisters in South Africa by shopping via their online craft store. Their products are all handmade by their crafters, which rely on sales to be able to provide for their families. This is a wonderful ministry, and we are honored to partner with them. You can visit the Woza Moya online store here: https://www.wozamoya.co.za/

Please note: We mark up the items during our Advent Market because the currency conversion is so low and we like to provide additional support to them. 100% of the proceeds from our market go directly back to our partners.

Prayer and Encouragement
Coming alongside to encourage and pray for our partners, missionaries, and friends is now more important than ever. Receiving a phone call, email, WhatsApp message, or text can lift people’s spirits and encourage them in the work God has sent them to do. If you have a heart for a specific ministry—whether local or global, and you already have their contact information—please reach out to them directly, and let us know to whom you are reaching out and what updates you learn.

This is a wonderful opportunity for a small group, Sunday School, or even a few friends to do together. For ministry and contact information, please contact Mary-Floye Federer at mffederer@fpchouston.org. To learn more about our priority partners, see the sidebar.
